audio narrative: the joy of missing out

When I finished walking the Te Araroa trail, I took a ferry across the Foveaux Strait to New Zealand’s third island, Rakiura (Stewart Island).

I was pretty bummed that I didn’t have enough time to walk the entire circuit.

Still, I had this soulful adventure walking for three days to Mason Bay with lots of time to explore this mystical wilderness as well as a chance to meet different sorts of people from thru-hikers, many that I really clicked with.

My “fear of missing out” turned into “joy of missing out” even though the bigger trail was left undone. It’s almost as though leaving something on the table made what I did that much better. Memories from that short visit have mixed in with hikes-yet-to-be and are now part of my dream-life.

  1. LOVE this! It’s an especially important message for the aging adventurer who sometimes might just not have the oomph to do it all! (me!)

    1. so true! I was so moved by Lucinda who is losing her motor skills but doing what she can and loving it all! Embracing JOMO because we can’t do it all a d what we have is pretty spectacular. ♥️

  2. Alison, this narrative is wonderful. I have to get my mind aroung “the joyce of missing out,” but I think I understand what you mean. I notice “Anita Hike” appears with your work now. And to think, I knew her when!
