PCT Day 41, ‘zero’ Eugene, OR

I avoid looking forward or backward, and try to keep looking upward. – Charlotte Bronte

Cool things I learned today:

My friend Kate sent me an article that states – You might…see walking as a kind of superpower, because when we get up and walk, our senses are sharpened.

Ain’t that the truth.

Another friend Gene sent me “40 Expressions of Advice” which puts as number 1, “Walk for 10-30 minutes every day, while smiling,” number 8, “Look at the sky at least once a day, appreciating the majesty of the world that surrounds us.” and number 28, “Appreciate your body, and its marvels.”

I saw so-so Shakespeare in Amazon Park, but I was with my friends so we managed to enjoy ourselves anyway on such a lovely evening of blooming cumulus and wind in the oak leaves. We then talked music over beers and sandwiches – and ended our day with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

Do me a favor – listen to the opening of this masterpiece as soon as you possibly can. The three quarter notes in the timpani followed by that soaring oboe solo is one of the purest expressions of joy I know. You simply can’t listen without smiling.

Life is good. See you back on the trail tomorrow.

  1. Alison…I was wrong…I told Gene you would not like advice…turns out you liked his advice list. Who knew? Not me. I guess there is still to learn about my husband…Zola…keep on hiking!

  2. Good morning-
I’m sorry that I have been a more-than-negligent correspondent and friend as I read your missives and don’t respond.
Maybe I can change; I’ll try to do better.
Our paths nearly crossed recently. Pat and I were in Eugene visiting friends August 2-7. We spent time there and also at a beach house near Newport

    1. Whoops! I sent the same msg again. I’ve spent the entire morning doing yard work. Doesn’t that sound better to you than hiking in the mountains? Maybe sail this afternoon, though there’s no wind.

You wrote from the 2 Sisters overlook one of the last days we were there. You must be nearly overwhelmed every day by the spectacular beauty of Oregon. It’s been an (almost too) busy summer-Massachusetts, Maine, hiking and kayaking in the UP, Oregon. I’m in Alexandria for a few days now; my mother turns 100 on Wednesday so we’ll celebrate her bday and have a cousins’ reunion. After that it’s a few days at a house on Lake Superior and shortly after that the BWCA for a week. Life is good.
I still miss you on MPR and getting together. Any thoughts about how long you’ll walk? We’re already talking ski trips and that means snow in the high country. Brrrr! Keep on truckin’. Enjoy the remainder of your walk through
    Oregon-have you left Eugene now?
    All the best…..
    Later…

    1. we just missed each other! I’m kind of Forrest Gump and walking until I want to stop. I love MN, but it’s been a bit ruined for me at the moment and the sadness completely overwhelmed me to the point of paralysis. Rich suggested I simply get away, so I did! I create visual-audio essays for a bit of money and mostly just try and be bad ass and do two long trails in a year. Who knows where it will take me emotionally!! It is incredibly beautiful! leaving Eugene now and heading south to Crater Lake. 🐥👣🎒
